Liver Hemangioma

Liver Hemangioma

A Common, Non-Cancerous Liver Growth

✅ What is a Liver Hemangioma?

A Liver Hemangioma is a benign (non-cancerous) cluster of abnormally formed blood vessels located in the liver. It's the most common type of benign liver tumor, and in most cases, it doesn’t cause health issues or require treatment.

Often, it’s found accidentally during scans for other medical reasons.

✅ Causes & Risk Factors

While the exact cause is unknown, several factors may contribute:

✔️ Congenital (present from birth)
✔️ Female hormones (estrogen) — Higher risk in women
✔️ Pregnancy — May enlarge due to hormonal changes
✔️ Hormone therapy or birth control pills
✔️ Common in ages 30–50

✅ Types of Liver Hemangiomas

✔️ Cavernous Hemangioma – Most common; blood-filled spaces
✔️ Capillary Hemangioma – Made up of smaller vessels
✔️ Giant Hemangioma – Over 4–10 cm; may cause symptoms

✅ Symptoms

Most people have no symptoms, but in rare cases:

✔️ Abdominal pain or pressure
✔️ Fullness after eating a small meal
✔️ Bloating, indigestion
✔️ Jaundice (if bile ducts are pressed)
✔️ Rupture (very rare emergency)

✅ Diagnosis

✔️ Ultrasound (USG) – Common first test
✔️ CT Scan with contrast – Detailed view
✔️ MRI – Best for confirming diagnosis
✔️ Biopsy not needed – Can cause bleeding; imaging is safer

✅ Monitoring & Follow-Up

✔️ Small hemangiomas need no treatment
✔️ Large ones may be monitored every 6–12 months
✔️ Avoid abdominal injury if lesion is large

✅ When is Treatment Necessary?

Treatment is considered when:

✔️ Hemangioma is over 10 cm
✔️ It’s growing rapidly
✔️ Causing pain or pressure
✔️ There's risk of rupture
✔️ Compressing nearby organs or bile ducts

✅ Treatment Options

✔️ Observation only – For small, asymptomatic cases
✔️ Surgical removal – Enucleation or hepatectomy for large/symptomatic ones
✔️ Embolization – Minimally invasive option to reduce blood flow
✔️ Radiotherapy – Rarely used
✔️ Liver Transplant – Extremely rare, only if other options fail

✅ Prognosis

✔️ Excellent long-term outcome
✔️ Most live normal lives without restrictions
✔️ No special diet or medicine required
✔️ No cancer risk
✔️ Rare cases treated effectively

🩺 When to See a Specialist

Contact a liver specialist if:

✔️ Your hemangioma is larger than 5–10 cm
✔️ You have persistent abdominal symptoms
✔️ You’re pregnant or plan to be
✔️ You’re taking hormone therapy or contraceptives
